BELL provides academic and social enrichment in urban after-school and summer programs to elementary school children (BELL scholars) ages 6-12 in New York City, Boston, and Baltimore. BELL's mission is to dramatically increase the academic achievements, self-esteem, and life opportunities of children living in low-income, urban communities.
BELL increased the number of scholars served annually by 18 percent. An Urban Institute study found an academic advantage of almost 2.5 months among BELL Summer participants compared to youth in other summer alternatives. By 2011, BELL will serve 15,000 scholars annually in a total of five regions (including two new sites: Springfield, MA, and Detroit, MI). BELL launched a capital campaign to support this growth strategy in FY2007, raising $13 million by December.
