Citizen Schools operates a national network of apprenticeship programs for middle school students, connecting adult volunteers to young people in hands-on learning projects after school. Students develop the academic and leadership skills they need to do well in school, get into college, and become leaders in their careers and in their communities.
Citizen Schools enrolled 2,443 students in 30 school sites in five states in 2006-07. By 2012, Citizen Schools plans to serve nearly 7,000 students per year and to strengthen the after-school sector nationwide; as of December 2007, the team had raised $22.5 million in growth capital to support this strategy. Citizen Schools has also worked with U.S. Senators Kennedy and Burr to introduce federal legislation to create a 10,000-member national education corps.
