Jumpstart
Mission
To inspire children to learn, adults to teach, families to get involved, and communities to progress together.

Model
Jumpstart builds literacy, language, social, and initiative skills in young children by pairing motivated college students and older adults with preschool children in caring and supportive one-to-one relationships for an entire school year. Jumpstart Corps members help children in Head Start and other early-learning programs build the necessary groundwork for future academic and social success.

Growth
  • Increased the number of children it serves by 20 percent, from 10,000 in 2005-06 to 12,000 in 2006-07.
  • In 2007, Jumpstart served children in 19 states with 70 university partners.
  • Named James Cleveland, former Chief Operating Officer, as President to drive the organization's growth.

Impact
  • Jumpstart partner children in 1:1 and small group relationships improved their school readiness skills by an average of 28 percent during the 2006-07 school year—significantly greater than a comparison group.
  • In 2007, Jumpstart mobilized more than 250,000 participants through its Read for the Record campaign, to read to children at more than 2,000 events across the country on one day.

Looking Ahead
In 2008-09, Jumpstart will create a new growth strategy to further increase its impact on the national dialogue on early childhood education. By 2015, Jumpstart aims to reach 100,000 children nationwide.
