To conserve imperiled species and ecosystems around the world by inspiring people to care about and protect nature.
Rare trains local conservation leaders to implement two-year social marketing initiatives called "Pride Campaigns," which mobilize communities to preserve their valuable and unique natural heritage. At the global level, Rare provides a platform for peer networking, learning, and knowledge-sharing between campaign sites.
- Grew annual revenue by 67 percent from $5.8 million in FY2006 to $9.7 million in FY2007, and reached more than three million people through Pride Campaigns on four continents.
- Launched 29 new Pride Campaigns bringing the total number of active campaigns to 55 in FY2007.
- Increased financial sponsorship from partners to cover more than half of all Pride Campaigns, representing a higher proportion of partner underwriting than ever before; began to execute on a regionalization plan by hiring leadership staff for three of its four regional operations: China, Indonesia, and the UK.
- To date, Rare has helped protect 192 million acres of terrestrial and marine habitat. Rare estimates that each Pride Campaign, on average, increases public awareness by 18 percentage points in its target area, and enhances conservation of 1.6 million acres by reducing human-induced threats to nature, such as over-fishing and forest fires.
- Rare has reached 7.8 million people in biodiversity hotspots around the world through the efforts of more than 120 local leaders trained by Rare; more than half remain in leadership roles at the original site and nearly all still work in conservation.
