Teach For America recruits diverse, outstanding college
graduates to commit two years to teach in low-income urban
and rural communities, and become life-long advocates to
expand opportunities for children. Teach For America’s mission
is to build the movement to eliminate educational inequity by
enlisting our nation’s most promising future leaders in the effort.
More than 5,000 corps members taught 440,000 students in
26 regions in 2006-07, an increase of 18 percent over 2005-06.
An external survey found that 95 percent of principals consider
corps members to be at least as effective as their overall teaching
faculty, with half rating them as more effective. In 2007,
at least 285 alumni were school leaders, including the new
Chancellor of Washington, DC public schools, Michelle Rhee,
and six were elected officials. By 2011, the organization plans to
place 8,000 corps members per year, and aspires to see 800 of
its alumni become school leaders and 100 reach elected office.
